The Digital Systems and Media Computing Laboratory (DSMC) was established in the end of 2002 and is located in Patras, Greece. DSMC operates under the School of Sciences and Technology of the Hellenic Open University (HOU).
HOU is the sole Greek State University that provides distance education in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels via the development and utilization of appropriate learning material and methods of teaching. Promoting scientific research as well as developing technology and methodology in distance learning fall within the scope of HOU's objectives. Like all other state universities in Greece, it is completely independent and autonomous.
HOU is comprised of four Schools, namely, School of Science and Technology, School of Humanities, School of Social Sciences, and School of Applied Arts. Currently the University offers 6 undergraduate and 24 postgraduate programmes to 29220 students.

DSMC is an active research group headed by Prof. A.N. Skodras and comprised of academic staff, 5 post-doctoral and 7 doctoral researchers. During the last years the group has organized 2 international conferences, published 6 books and a volume of articles both in international journals and conferences. Two patents in the area of image processing have also been established as a result of their research efforts.
DSMC has an active policy of developing its own research and also participates in national and international research projects, following its vocation of acting in synergy with universities and the industry, sharing its investigative experience and developing new ways of managing and accessing digital information.
